Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

IHPM's First "e-Mag" Special Issue of Health & Productivity Management

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
(COPD) is the next great chronic disease “epidemic” in the workplace – and in the world.  Soon to become the third leading cause of death globally and the only one on the increase, COPD produces a huge total burden of illness that includes medical expenditures, lost work time, diminished productivity at work and increasing disability (two thirds of the 12 million Americans already diagnosed are of working age).
What Are The Symptoms of COPD?
You can have COPD and not know it. You may think you're just out of shape. You may think you're just getting older. But you are working harder to breathe. COPD symptoms can differ from person to person.
You may have one or more of the following:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent cough (or "smoker's cough")
  • Mucus coming from the lungs or throat
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Lung infections, such as bronchitis, more than once a year
Are You at Risk for COPD?
Click on the following text:  COPD PopulationTM Screener  --  to complete a simple survey to identify if you are at risk for COPD.
The survey asks questions about you, your breathing and what you are able to do. Please print a copy of the survey, answer the five questions and then add up your score (the directions are at the bottom of the survey). Please remember to share the completed survey with your doctor.
Pay for Performance for COPD
<click here to download the white paper>
In 2007, the total estimated cost of COPD nationwide ranked third among chronic diseases, at $42.6 billion.
Analysis shows that the average annual cost of medical complications for a COPD patient is almost $3,000.
Reducing the complication rate could yield significant savings and improved quality of life for COPD patients. The savings generated could be used to fund P4P payments to physicians while also creating a dividend or health care purchasers sponsoring the P4P program. This white paper contains the details necessary for a health care purchaser to adopt COPD as a new P4P program, or to add it to existing P4P efforts. As P4P programs become more established and mainstream, it will be important for health care purchasers to expand their scope to include the wide range of clinical challenges affecting patients. Given its prevalence and impact on patient health, COPD is an appropriate candidate for pay-for-performance.
COPD Transitions in Care
<click here to download the white paper>
As the health of our nation worsens and chronic disease rates climb, it is becoming apparent that our health system is poorly equipped to meet the challenges it faces.  Central to this is a payment system that fails to reward the coordination and communication required to effectively treat patients moving between providers.  A more complex health system and increased patient morbidity means patients will experience more transitions of care in an increasingly disjointed system.  As defined by The Medicare Quality Improvement Community, transitions of care are when a patient moves between providers and treatment settings as their condition and health care needs change.  Read more by clicking the link above.........
